Have you tried calling your unemployment office during the pandemic? I live in New Jersey, and it's impossible. My unemployment benefits stopped without any explanation. I have tried email, phone, mail, calling my Congressmen Frank Pallone's office. I have not gotten any response. My benefits stopped in May. We are now in middle of August (as of this writing), and I have not heard from the unemployment office. At this point, I don't think I will get any needed support from the government that was promised. So why have a program if the government can't support it? This makes the government look totally incompetent. Now you know why people distrust the government since they are good at creating programs fast for political gains, but terrible at providing a good experience. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. If you want to win at the highest level, you must produce excellent stats that show that you are gaining on your competitors at each step toward a win. However, stats don't always predict a win. Still, it will undoubtedly tell you that you were in an excellent position to win. You must also be bold and need some luck. You can't play it safe when the competition is fierce. At the highest level, everyone has the talent and is driven to do whatever it takes to win. This is what you see on the PGA Tour every week. It is very difficult to make it on the PGA tour and even harder to make the cut in a tournament. Half of the players who play in a tournament do not get to play on weekends; hence, do not collect a paycheck. You not only have to have the game to be on the tour but not think that one shot could end up determining whether you make a paycheck or go home and try again. No one deals with instant rejection way golfers do. And remember players who play on the tour are top golfers in the world. They all have the game to win any tournament. Each year, roughly 30 to 40 players win a tournament. At most, only four players can win major tournaments like the Masters, US Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship. Winning a major is a big deal since it puts a golfer in a very special category in golf. This is what I observed watching the 2020 PGA Championship won by Collin Morikawa. He led in key stats used in golf called strokes gained, but that alone did not lead to his win. It put him in an excellent position to win. To win, he had to make a bold decision and get a little lucky. He pulled out his driver on the risk/reward 16th hole and said: "Screw it, let's make something happen." Indeed he did. He hit the shot of the tournament as the ball stopped 7 feet from the hole. He eagled the hole and went on to win the tournament by two strokes over Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey. But when you look deeper, you see how close this tournament really was. And the hole that was pivotal in deciding who won the tournament was the 16th hole. We all are going to face a risk/reward 16th hole in what we do. Are you going to play like Morikawa to win? Or are you going to play it safe? Luck trumps good stats and boldness I will use two players who hit an excellent shot on the 16th hole. One was Bryson DeChambeau, and the other was Collin Morikawa. Bryson Dechambeau hit a terrific drive, but the ball bounced and veered to the right and stopped on the fringe of the green pin high. Since the ball was on the fringe, it made the eagle putt difficult. DeChambeau missed by a little and birdied the hole. Birdie is good, but eagle is better. A group later, Colin Morikawa hit a drive of his life that bounced on the fairway near the green and luckily got a good bounce, and the ball stopped 7-foot from the hole on the green making the eagle putt easier. Morikawa made the eagle putt and parred the next two holes to win the tournament. Watching golf on TV lets you clearly see what we all need to do to win majors in our field.

When there is a negotiation or any meeting taking place taking place related to government business, it should be streamed on the Internet on CSPAN channels. We need to know what is going on so we can make up our minds. Right now, there is very little transparency in the government. What happens when there is no transparency? We are subjected to spinning and everyone goes into their corners and division is further exacerbated. Will transparency reduce division. Probably not, but at least we will know whether the politicians are doing a good job and whose interests are they serving. I say, give transparency a chance and let the chips fall where it may since what we have right now is not working. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. The purpose of any interview is to show up, stand out, and secure an offer. If you are meeting Joe Biden, then you are on a shortlist of potential candidates. You will prepare to show up. But you still don't have an offer, So what do you do to stand out? You must seize control during the interview. Seizing Control This is the most important part of any job interview. The reason for this is that the interviewer will take a very short time to make a go/no-go decision; hence, you must seize control very early. The best way to do this is to have a three-minute pitch ready to be delivered on why you should be hired. The purpose of the pitch is to steer the conversation toward a direction where you can score points and win. To pull this off, you need to script the pitch first, practice hard and perform at the interview. In this post, I have shown the script of a pitch I would use to seize control. Look, you don't have to like Joe Biden to do this exercise. This exercise is all about how you would show up, stand out, and secure an offer if you were under consideration for the VP job. This what we all have to do when we are on a shortlist for a job. I coach people on job interviewing, and getting my clients to do a three-minute pitch is very hard, including those pursuing executive-level jobs. Most never do it no matter how much I encourage them. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that getting rejected is a lot easier than making a three-minute video that could help them get the job they want. People don't like to put in the work that is necessary. Interviewing is the most important skills for success. If you would like to learn more, you can watch the talk I gave on this topic: Interviewing is the Most Important Skill for Success... Today. Why three-minute speech is important to getting a job? A three-minute pitch is important because it allows you to focus, based on your research, on what will resonate with the interviewer. You don't want to think during the interview. You want to do most of your thinking before the interview during your preparation. Preparing for a job interview is no different than how PGA professional golfers prepare for major golf tournaments, if not all tournaments. I was watching the PGA Championship, and when golfers were interviewed after their round of play, they all tend to say they tried to stick to their process and not think on the course. The winner of the tournament will be the player who has a good game plan and can execute well will walk away with the Wanamaker trophy. The three-minute speech will allow you to stand out in any interviews, including interviewing for the VP job in any field and likely securing a job offer. Does this mean you will always walk away with a job offer? No. It just means that you will have done everything in your power to stand out. The decision to hire you is outside your control. Similarly, a golfer can only control the ball he or she is hitting. A golfer can't control how others play the game. Rough Script of the Three-Minute Pitch for the VP Job ( Indented ) I wholeheartedly agree with you when you say that the soul of our country is at stake in this election. I believe as you do that the experiment to make this a perfect union will end if we don't win in November. That's why it's critical that you pick the VP that will give you the best chance to win in November, and help you move this country toward the vision of our modern founding fathers like John Lewis. So what does restoring the soul of our country mean to me? It has two parts. One is believing in fundamental American beliefs; second, governing and prioritizing based on those beliefs. Fundamental American Beliefs The traditional American beliefs have been life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. But we need to revise that since we have lost our ways since Donald Trump became president. We need to restore beliefs in the following: Constitution Democracy Justice Decency Facts Science Compassion Equality When we start becoming more like autocratic countries, we start losing the soul of our country. Time has come to revise the Declaration of Independence and come up with a Declaration of Revival. Governing Beliefs The second part is to govern based on those fundamental beliefs. We have to strengthen our national security, economic security, and future security. National Security
America is first when it leads, not when it follows or hides. With your leadership and the outstanding team you will put together, I know America will again be the leader of the free world. And when that happens, the world will be a better, safer, and prosperous place. And I will contribute in any way I can to make that happen. Now it's your turn to come up with a script of a three-minute pitch you would use if you were under consideration for the VP job. If you don't do it for this exercise, you will need one when you are interviewing for a job. It will increase your chances of securing an offer. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. People want to improve their speaking skills so they can influence, persuade, and win. But very few want to put in the time to improve this skill. As you know, there are no short cuts to developing and mastering any skills. Ben Hogan, a great American professional golfer, when asked what was his secret to success in golf? He would point to the ground and say, "it's all in the dirt." He meant that unless you engage in deliberate practice in pounding many golf balls every day, you are not going to improve your game. This applies to speaking skills. My "hoganese" answer to this is "It's all in the videos." I will show you what you can do in the next thirty days to set yourself apart from the rest in improving your speaking skills. It will be hard in the beginning, but after thirty days, you will be able to speak to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Are you ready to improve this skill? What is the 30-Day Challenge? You will record a three-minute video on any topics for 30 straight days. It is that simple. Unfortunately, I can't even get people to record even one three-minute speech. I have found when I talk to the audience, and I ask how many will record one three-minute speech, all the hands typically go up. But do you know what percentage actually do it? Just one percent. That's right. Even with smartphone cameras, it is tough for people to record a simple three-minute speech. For example, I recently coached a job candidate. I asked him if he can put together a 3-minute speech on why someone should talk to him about the value he can bring to a company. He said it should be easy since all he had to do was record it on his iPhone. I told him about the low percentage of people who actually follow through. He said he will definitely do it. Since I didn't get his video the next day, I sent him a script to make it easier. A week has gone by, and I still have not received his three-minute video. So as you can see, it looks simple, but it id very hard in practice. Why take the 30-Day Challenge? Here are some of the benefits of taking this Challenge:
What process to use to record a three-minute speech? I used the following process when I recorded my speeches. I spent no more than one hour on each speech.
Note, you can always go back and redo a speech after you finish the 3/30 Challenge or make it unlisted or private on YouTube. If you want to get a job, persuade people with your ideas, you must know how to deliver a bullet-proof pitch. If you don't know how to do this in one minute, learn from Captain Quint how he does it in the movie "Jaws." With his pitch, he gets the job to kill the Great White Shark that has been terrorizing beachgoers in a fictional New England summer resort town called Amity Island. Pitching is hard. You have to know a lot and synthesize it into something short, clear, and impactful so that it results in a win. Captain Quint's pitch is so good that I want you to watch this video clip before continuing with this post and see if you agree with my assessment. Now, this pitch is in a movie, so it has to be perfect. A movie has the luxury of having the best screenwriters, best directors, best actors, best editors, and multiple takes. We have to do all of this ourselves to deliver a great pitch, in one take. What Does Captain Quint do so well in this one minute? A lot. The one thing you probably want to avoid is the part where Captain Quint scratches the chalkboard with his nails to get attention. But everything after that is absolutely perfect on how to make your pitch in one minute. Note, there are no questions asked after he delivers his pitch since he addresses everything that matters. 1. Understand the problem and situation well before giving the pitch Captain Quint is patiently sitting in a room full of scared and frustrated people in a town council's meeting. The council members are trying to figure out how to kill the shark that has killed a couple of people in their beachfront town. Captain Quint is well prepared before he gets their attention. He knows that the town has a major problem; he knows there is an urgency; he knows they don't have much time; he knows they don't know who can get the job done; he knows there is confusion on what action to take. Once he senses that and validates it by attending the meeting, he shows up, seizes the moment, and secures an offer. Takeaway: Don't act unless you have everything figured out. Don't ever "fly blind" when you are trying to win by pitching. Once you have all the facts, then show up, seize the moment and win. 2. Establish your credentials early Once Captain Quint gets the council's attention, he tells the attendees that they already know him. He doesn't waste time going over his background. He is known. And he also knows that people tend to hire whom they know. Takeaway: Similarly, when looking for a job, you should provide all the information to potential interviewers about yourself ahead of time. You want to keep the focus at the meeting on the job that has to be done. Also, no one cares how you get their attention if you can solve their main problem cheaper, better, faster, and smarter. Salespeople often waste a lot of time establishing their credentials. Don't do this. Make sure you are already credentialed before you show up. 3. Explain the problem as people see it Captain Quint tells the people at the council meeting exactly what the problem is, i.e., there is a "bad fish" out there. He says he will catch this bird for them, but it isn't going to be a walk in the park based on what they are dealing with. He sets the proper expectations right up front; he does not try to oversell himself. He is persuading through logic. Takeaway: Let the employer know the difficulty of the job and set the proper expectations. If it were easy, then they would have already found someone to do the job. 4. Get to the pain that people feel---losing money here Captain Quint then proceeds to tell the town council that they better act quickly. Time is not on their side since if they don't act soon and get rid of this problem, they stand to lose the tourist's business, which would be disastrous. Takeaway: Unless you know what the company stands to lose, they will have no urgency to hire you. You must put this in cold financial terms. 5. Instill confidence that you alone can get the job done Captain Quint never mentions his competition but hints that the council is better off with a bird in the hand versus two in the bush. He is there in front of them, and others are not. So he has the advantage since time is on his side and the shark is still out there, causing havoc to the town's people and its economy. And we know this works since we know someone who did this in 2016. Takeaway: Get the employer to make a decision quickly. Otherwise, the employer will be left with an alternative that may not get the job done as well as you can. You have to make the employer move to a decision. 6. Negotiate price once you have shown that you can solve the problem Captain Quint first tells them how tough the job is and then informs the council that his price is $3,000 to find the shark and $10,000 to catch it and kill it. Takeaway: Negotiate the price upfront and tell them what you are willing to do it for. In the end, this is still a business transaction. 7. Don't make people think too hard Captain Quint then urges the council to not be cheap and make a decision real soon, and they better be smart and meet his demands. He is not letting the council overthink since he does not want any delays. Also, he knows it is in the council's interest to not delay awarding the contract to Captain Quint. Takeaway: Don't let the company think too much since if they are thinking, you are losing. 8. Reinforce another pain---survival Captain Quint does something interesting by telling them that besides money, their lives are at stake, and are they going to be cheap when it comes to saving lives? Takeaway: Don't dilly dally about money when survival is at stake. How much is that worth to a company? 9. Set the terms for taking the job Captain Quint then tells the council his terms. He will work by himself since that is the best way to deliver the result the council is looking for. Takeaway: Tell the company how you like to do the job, which is your way of doing it to succeed. 10. Close the deal with a strong emotion Captain Quint then goes for the kill for what the people want but are afraid to say it. He will deliver to them the "head, tail, and the whole damn thing." Nothing more needs to be said. Takeaway: Tell them what outcome they really want but are afraid to say in simple language. The mayor would give him the job right away, but protocol prevents him, so he sheepishly tells him, "We will take it under advisement." Captain Quint departs without saying anything more than paying his respect to the people in a polite manner. He gets the job. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. The book "The Grapes of Wrath" is a classic because it has many lessons to teach. The author John Steinbeck tells a great story of the trials and tribulations of the Joad family. The Joad family is forced to leave their life of farming in Oklahoma because of the dust bowl. They decide to head to California to get a job and start a new life. In this post, I want to focus on the advice Tom Joad gives to a man working at a junkyard who is very bitter about life and work. With the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is natural to feel a little down, especially if you are out of a job. And those with a job may feel lucky they at least have a job but may not be happy being stuck in a job with a bad boss. What to do? Tom Joad's advice may help you. Tom Joad stopped at the junkyard with his brother Al to find a part to fix his truck so the Joad family can continue their journey to California. Tom did not expect to run into a man who was close to being down and out. Tom offers this man the hard truth and puts some sense in his head that the man is to blame for his situation. And it is he who must do something to change it. Tom Joad is the right person to tell this man since Tom had it tough. He just got paroled from prison for killing a man in a fight and finds out that his family's farm has been taken away by the bank. He joins them on a long and arduous journey to California to start a new and, hopefully, a better life. Along their journey, their old car breaks down. Tom and his brother Al go to a nearby junkyard to get a spare part to repair the truck so they can continue their journey. When they arrive at the junkyard, they are greeted by a one-eyed man working there. He is not very friendly. The man is bitter since he has lost an eye. He hates his job because of an abusive boss whom he would like to kill. The one-eyed man is stuck in his life, and it shows in how he approaches his job, especially customers. The one-eyed man complains to Tom how bad his situation is at work and is even contemplating killing his boss with a wrench. Tom had enough listening to his complaints and offered this simple advice. "Whyn't you roll on? Got no guards to keep ya here." The man says to Tom that it is not easy to get a job when you have one eye. Tom tells the man to focus on what he has and take care of himself instead of waiting to go after his boss with a wrench. "Now look-a-here, fella. You got that eye wide open. An' ya dirty, ya stink. Ya jus' askin' for it. Ya like it. Lets ya feel sorry for yaself.' Course ya can't get no woman with that empty eye flap-pin' aroun'. Put somepin over it an' wash ya face. You ain't hittin' nobody with no pipe wrench." Again the man brings up that he has limited his options because of one eye. Tom had enough of this man's complaints and told him to stop feeling sorry for himself. To get in his head, Tom tells him a story about how a one-legged prostitute turned her disability into a financial advantage. "Ya full a crap. Why, I knowed a one-legged whore one time. Think she was takin' two-bits in a alley? No, by God! She's gettin' half a dollar extra. She says, 'How many one-legged women you slep' with? None!' she says.' O.K.,' she says. 'You got somepin pretty special here, an' it's gonna cos' ya half a buck extry.' An' by God, she was gettin' 'em, too, an' the fellas comin' out thinkin' they're pretty lucky. She says she's good luck." Tom's advice is getting through the one-eyed man, but the one-eyed man is still not sure he can change. Tom tells him to fudge a little with "Tell 'em ya dong's growed sence you los' your eye." Sometimes in life, you need to make yourself look good. You don't need to tell people the absolute truth since they don't want the truth. They want a story that tells the the truth they want to believe. You want to keep it general so it can't be a lie. And that is exactly what Tom is telling the one-eyed man to do to own his narrative. Tom tells the man that he can get a job even with one eye since he can work with one eye. The man was persuaded and wanted to know if there was any room to join them. Tom told the man that there was no room, but if he really wanted to make a change, he could fix one of the wrecks in his yard and go on his own. The man said that he will do that. Tom told the man not what he wanted to hear but what he needed to hear. Tom Joad does a few things in this interaction with a one-eyed man that we can all learn from:

Tasha Eurich, the author of Insight, writes in her book that self-awareness is a meta-skill for success. Self-awareness, according to Eurich's research, has many beneficial effects:
As you can see, self-awareness is a critical skill for success in just about everything. However, most people don't put a lot of importance to this skill especially when they are developing relationships or looking for a job. I think it would save them a lot of grief later if they focused on self-awareness, so they don't end up wasting a lot of time, energy, and money. The reason to be attuned to this skill is simple. It is hard to become self-aware if you aren't. Soft skills like self-awareness are not "soft," they are very hard. It is also very hard to detect someone's soft skills if you are not good at identifying what that even looks like. For example, have you ever seen a person who is not self-aware able to make a change? It is rare and has taken that person who was able to change a very long time. In this post, I focus on looking at self-awareness when you are interviewing for a job. We spend so much time in this endeavor, so it is important to know how self-aware people are whom you may end up working with. And also determine whether the organization overall is self-aware. The only way to find out is to ask three simple questions during the interview. I have modified three questions that Eurich uses when she is conducting a Team Candor Challenge at workshops with corporate clients. You can ask these three questions to get a good idea of the self-awareness quotient of an individual and the organization. 1) What does each of your team members do that contribute to the team's success? 2) What behavior could each person change that would make the team more successful? 3) What do I need to do to make the team successful? Assuming that you determine that people and the organization are self-aware, you still have to keep working on it from the day you start work. If you do, you will not only enjoy your work but enjoy being around your team. You will find that a cohesive team is usually highly self-aware. It is a lot of work, but without developing and mastering this skill, you will find life hard and work even harder. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. President Teddy Roosevelt's leadership during a major health crisis that Made America Great3/20/2020 Presidential leadership is critical to success during a major national or international crisis. We are in major international health and economic crisis with the Covid-19 Pandemic. President Teddy Roosevelt is an excellent example of how he handled the health crisis during the construction of the Panama Canal. People probably have long forgotten how close America came to failing like France in building the Panama Canal. Because of Teddy Roosevelt's leadership of Roosevelt and a critical decision, he made that turned things around and made America Great. We are at a point where if this crisis is not handled well, America may no longer remain a global power. I don't want to be an alarmist, but just look at how things have changed in a very short time. In less than a month, the policies of two Democratic presidential candidates (Yang and Sanders) are being pushed by the Republicans. All power, according to history, comes to an end sooner or later. Will 2020 be the beginning of the end of America's greatness? Executive Decision The key decision Roosevelt made was to provide full support to Dr. William Crawford Gorgas. Gorgas' job was to rid of malaria from the Isthmus of Panama to reduce deaths, so the construction of the canal can take place. People were scared to go to Panama and work on this project. The decision was not simple since Roosevelt believed that malaria was caused by garbage and filth, and not mosquitoes. When the cost of ridding tropical diseases went up significantly, the leadership team within the Isthmian Canal Commission wanted to replace Gorgas so they can allocate more resources toward engineering. Roosevelt had to make a critical decision. So how did he make this decision? 1) He listened to Chief Engineer John Stevens, who sent a letter telling Roosevelt that the success of building the canal goes through Gorgas' work of reducing deaths from tropical diseases. 2) He listened to his friend Dr. William Henry Welch of Johns Hopkins, who told Roosevelt that he had the right guy on the project. And he also told Roosevelt Gorgas is correct about the mosquito theory for the cause of malaria. 3) He listened to his hunting buddy Dr. Alexander Lambert. Lambert told Roosevelt that give Gorgas his full-throated support if he wants a legacy of building the Panama Canal. Roosevelt realized that Gorgas was critical to building the Panama Canal and told the Commission to get off his back and let him do his job. That is the high stakes President Trump and America face today. Pandemics can make or break global powers. We need someone like Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of NIAID, to help us get through this health crisis. President Trump should learn from President Teddy Roosevelt to guide him through this crisis and Keep America Great. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach. You need to put together a plan to learn since you are going to be locked down for the next few weeks or months. No one knows how long this crisis will last. No one knows whether the virus will burn itself, disappear and come back again in fall, or burn itself out for good. Let's hope the latter is what happens. Since we are all doing our part in defeating this enemy, but you can't ignore your development during this challenging period. Learning has never been easier than it is today. We have so much stuff online like YouTube, Coursera, Edx, Khan Academy, etc. that you can turn to. And most of it is free. Here is what I am doing that I want to share with you:
Read If you are home and not going out and about or have to take care of your kids, you should have some time to read. I plan to take advantage of getting a lot of books to read during this crisis. Write Reading is good, but you can plus it by writing your thoughts from what you read. You can either keep your writing private or public by publishing it. Writing will help you crystallize your thoughts. Speak Writing is good, but you can plus it by preparing a speech, preferably a short one. Speaking will help you have an interesting conversation with people. Publish Writing is good, but you can plus it by publishing your thoughts as a blog post on your website or LinkedIn or post a video on YouTube. Once you have enough of content in a specific area, you can take this to the next level and publish a book, create an online course or a workshop. Producing content every day adds up quickly. You can also learn technical skills by taking courses online from Coursera, Edx, Udacity and others. My go to place for learning is thegreatcoursesplus.com. This is a yearly subscription under $200 but well worth it based on the wide variety of courses they offer. It is easy to get overwhelmed, distracted and lose focus with all the news regarding the Covid-19 crisis. As I said, if you have taken care of yourself, your loved one's health and basic necessities, then you must focus on your personal development. You are unlikely to get a better time to invest in yourself. Take advantage of it now so you can thrive on the other side of this crisis whether you are employed or unemployed. ##### Jay Oza is an author, speaker, executive coach.
