Long Bio:
One month into his first job at Bell & Howell, Jay Oza realized that he was terrified of speaking in front of an audience; he could not even deliver an engineering status report that he put together to the leadership team. Instead of taking immediate action to fix this problem, he ignored it since he could get good jobs because he was good at writing software. That decision hurt his career.
But he decided to join Toastmasters club at Bell Labs to improve his speaking skills. After becoming a competent Toastmasters, Oza gained confidence. He wanted to leverage his speaking skills along with his technical skills and moved into a customer focused position as a sales consultant. He worked his way up to Principal Sales Consultant at Oracle Corporation.

He worked his way up to Principal Sales Consultant at Oracle Corporation.
Oza left the corporate world to become an independent business consultant to help small technical companies succeed in driving sales. While doing this job, he noticed that an area that hurt technical companies more than anything is their lack of communication skills. Oza wanted to learn more so he became a mentor for the public speaking course offered by Coursera. He mentored close to thousand students by coaching them, reviewing their speeches, recording videos on speech techniques, and hosting a YouTube show called Speech Talk Live. From this experience, he gained deep insights on what enables speakers to achieve their objectives that he writes in his book Winning Speech Moments: How to Achieve Your Objective with Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere. Unlike other books on this topic, Oza focuses on high-stakes speaking where you either win or lose based on your speaking skills.
Oza has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in computer science from New Jersey Institute of Technology. He worked at AT&T Bell Labs as a software consultant and in sales positions at Oracle, IBM, and Sungard. Lastly, he is extremely proud of the work he has done as a volunteer for Hire Heroes USA, helping military veterans get good high-paying jobs. He received an award from them in 2018 for his work.

Speaker Introduction
When Jay Oza is not a student, he is a writer, a speaker, and an executive coach. He first discovered that he could not speak to win when one month into his first job, he was unable to deliver an engineering status report he had put together for the leadership team. He then made a solemn vow that this would never happen again by simply avoiding giving speeches of any kind. But one day he accidentally walked into a Toastmasters meeting at Bell Labs and realized that the time had come to renounce the vow. He joined Toastmasters and soon gained enough confidence to abandon the glorious career of programming and move into various sales-related positions.
Since leaving the corporate “world,” he has been helping individuals and small businesses succeed with focused messaging, relevant content, and memorable performance. Based on his success, he wanted to learn more, so he started mentoring students all over the world online who were taking the Coursera’s public speaking courses. Soon he started teaching and coaching others how to craft and deliver high-stakes speeches. Furthermore, as a volunteer for Hire Heroes, he has leveraged his expertise to help military veterans get good high-paying jobs.
In 2017, he published his first book, Winning Speech Moments: How to Achieve Your Objective with Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere, a distillation of his experience, knowledge, mentoring, coaching, and research. The book’s main idea is that unless you create winning speech moments when you speak, it is hard for you to win. But the only way you can create these winning speech moments is through practice. Hence, his tagline for his mission to help people succeed through speaking is “Don’t Wing It, Go WIN It!”
