In this episode I have the honor to speak with Patrice Bain, who is a co-author of an excellent book "Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning." Besides being an author, Patrice is an educator, teacher and consultant. After reading her book and speaking with her, I now see that we tend to put a lot of emphasis on encoding when it comes to learning. Encoding is putting things in our heads usually through teaching. But learning is manifested when we can get things out of our head, not just in short term to ace tests in schools, but in long-term when we can use that knowledge to think critically. Though Patrice;s focus was to test out cognitive research findings in her classrooms, but the learning strategies she used in her classroom can easily be tweaked and used outside classrooms such as advanced study, workplace and individually to become a lifelong learner. I think you will get a lot out of this interview, but to make it stick, please refer to other resources (patricebain.com and powerfulteaching.org) and you will get more details in her book "Powerful Teaching:Unleash the Science of Learning" which I have been recommending to anyone who wants to learn how to learn for themselves or to parents who want to help their children become powerful learners. If you have time constraints, you can use the time stamps to go to the part that interests you. I have highlighted my favorite parts. 4:00 --- Patrice’s teaching journey 6:10 --- Focus on learning to help students learn for long term 9:50 --- Administration support to try different learning strategies 12:30 --- Why students are not taught how to learn? 15:00 --- What makes someone an outstanding teacher? 16:50 --- How do you get better at teaching even after teaching for over 25 years? 18:40 --- Role of parents in students’ learning 22:25 --- The 2/20 method parents can use to help their child learn 25:18 --- Other skills a child will learn using the 2/20 method 27:50 --- Role of students learning from peers in school 31:00 --- Do good learners make good teachers? 34:28 --- Why did you write the book “Powerful Teaching” and who is the target audience? 39:40 --- Three stages of learning 42:32 --- How important is encoding in helping students store the info and be able to easily retrieve it? 46:21 --- How do you as a teacher try to make information interesting for the students? 48: 05 --- Can you use many of the strategies in the workplace? 52:25 --- How I used some of the strategies when preparing for a talk? 55:50 --- Learning on your own, say through reading a book 1:01:00 --- Role of technology when it comes to learning 1:03:25 --- Learning strategies used in other countries 1:06:14 --- Becoming an independent learner for the future 1:08:37 --- Strategies Patrice uses to remain a life-long learner 1:10:05 --- Technique I use to learn and practice retrieval Patrice Bain’s Website: Patricebain.com Patrice Bain’s Email: patrice@patrice.com Patrice's Book: Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning Other Excellent Resources on Learning Strategies: Powerfulteaching.org Retrievalpractice.org Content from the interview with Patrice Bain: Blog Post Five Questions for Patrice Bain, co-author of "Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning" Video Shortcuts How did you come across using scientific approach to learning?
